THE PROMISE:

Taking a new animal into your life is a long-term decision. Before you adopt a PAWS (or any other) animal, can you make this promise?• I accept the responsibility of caring for this animal for its whole life or perhaps 10-15 years.
• I will provide adequate daily food and water.
• I will provide comfortable shelter and a secure, fenced compound.
• I will give my pet the time, care and attention it needs, including vaccinations, neutering and veterinary care, and not allowing my dog to wander off alone.
• I will protect it from fear and distress.
• I will give my pet adequate exercise and toilet opportunities away from its sleeping area.
• I will make sure someone can look after my pet over times when I go away on holiday.

Regardless of where you adopt your pet, take time to choose which animal best suits your home, compound, family, budget and lifestyle.

A young animal will need extra care, time, gentle behaviour and toilet training and an older animal will need you to spend a lot of time with it to gain its trust.

If adopting a young animal, consider the size it will become when it reaches adulthood including its appetite, energy levels, exercise and grooming needs.

• Do you have any young children? Make sure you teach your children to love and respect all household animals.
• Do you have any other pets?
• How will they all interact with one another?

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE IN ADOPTION AND YOU WILL HAVE A LOYAL FRIEND FOR LIFE!

PAWS neutering policy (as of 12 May 2005)

Since 12 May 2005, the PAWS Committee has pledged that all PAWS animals must be neutered BEFORE they are released from the shelter.

We are happy to state that today all adult animals, all pure breed animals (cat or dog, of any age) and all pups and kittens are neutered BEFORE being released.

Please read these guidelines through very carefully before you decide whether you can be a responsible pet owner:

If you decide to look after a pet it is the most important thing to understand that YOUR pet is YOUR responsibility for the rest of its life, and that should usually mean for at least the next 10-15 years.

We often hear people say “I bought this puppy for my daughter but now it has grown up and she doesn’t look after it any more”. This is a shameful attitude to have because in the first place, you should NEVER buy or adopt an animal solely on behalf of a child.

It is natural that children may grow out of caring for an animal because eventually they realize that it is hard work and a daily ADULT responsibility. It is therefore the responsibility of the parents to teach their child how to care for a pet, and to properly look after it themselves should their child neglect to do so.

An animal must only be adopted in the first place if there is a responsible adult around to make the commitment to look after it. It is a similar situation to having a baby; you wouldn’t hold a child responsible for looking after a baby so therefore it should never be solely a child’s responsibility to look after a pet.

You must not choose to adopt an animal unless YOU the ADULT can consider looking after it for the rest of its life. This means not only feeding it daily, changing litter trays and ensuring it has adequate exercise, but also giving it the love and attention it needs to feel a part of your family and making adequate provisions for its care when you go away on holiday.

How much does it cost for me to adopt a pet from PAWS?

The adoption fees for an animal from PAWS is as follows:

1. Adult Dog: RM50
2. Puppy: RM80
3. Adult Cat: RM30
4. Kitten: RM50
5. Pedigree animals: Minimum RM250 (rarely come with certificates)

However if you see an un-neutered puppy or kitten you wish to adopt, you may book the animal at PAWS by paying a surcharge of RM50 for dogs and RM30 for cats. Our personnel will show you the relevant forms to complete. However the animal will only be released to you after our veterinarian has neutered it. If you require more information, kindly contact the PAWS office.

If you wish to surrender an animal to PAWS, please be aware that you are required to pay a surrendering fee – adult dog: RM50; puppy: RM80; adult cat: RM30; kitten: RM50.

Adoption and surrendering fees are necessary to help us meet the operational costs of running the shelter. Although we have set a standard minimum fee per animal we ask that if you can afford to donate more to our charity, then please do so.

At present PAWS receives no government funding to run our shelter meaning we survive sorely on the kindness of the public for donations.

Interested in being a PAWS volunteer?

When you volunteer at PAWS, you can choose to spend time with any animal that you want and do the work that you enjoy. Whether you stay only for an hour or a whole day, it is still a big help to us and a real joy to the animals. There are various types of jobs to be done, ideas of which are listed according to the animal.We welcome volunteers at any time during OPENING TIMES:Monday – Friday: 9.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.
Wednesday: CLOSED for maintenance
Saturday & Sunday:9.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.

Note  : Student group volunteers for weekdays only.

Whether a regular or occasional volunteer, you are always welcome at PAWS.

How to become a volunteer?

1. All volunteers are required to fill an application form and submit it to the office before being accepted as a volunteer. Approval must first be obtained from the Shelter Manger to ensure that volunteers are given adequate orientation and guidance.
2. There is also a form for junior volunteers (under 18 years old) and they should obtain this from the office or download and print from this website so they can get their guardians/parents to sign before they come.
3. For a first timer it would be helpful if you could call the office ahead of your visit so we can arrange for someone to be available to show you what to do.

Tips and Guidelines

• Wear suitable clothes: the older the better and you may want to wear long sleeves because there are mosquitoes around!
• Wear disposable gloves for dirty jobs (available from the treatment room).
• Always latch the doors and gates behind you.
• Wash your hands often, especially if moving between families with young animals.
• It is important to talk to visitors when they arrive. Give them information on the animals you know about or direct them to one of the staff. Please supervise all children that come round to visit.
• Please register with the office by signing the volunteer register every time you visit.

PAWS accepts unwanted pets and stray animals – puppies, adult dogs, kittens and adult cats. Once they come to our shelter, they are given medical attention, fed and re-homed if possible.

As much as PAWS would wish otherwise, we cannot guarantee that all surrendered animals can be housed with us indefinitely due to space, staff and financial constraints. This is unavoidable for so long as surrenders outnumber adoptions.

If you surrender any animal to PAWS, you do so with the understanding that the animal may be “put to sleep”. If this is not acceptable to you, please do not leave any animal at PAWS.

Help PAWS by neutering your pets.

Harap maklum, PAWS tidak dapat menjamin bahawa semua haiwan yang ditinggalkan di PAWS akan dipelihara atau diberi tuanpunya baru. Dukacitanya ini tidak dapat dielakkan, selagi bilangan haiwan yang ditinggalkan di sini melebihi jumlah yang diambil. Faktor kekurangan ruang, pekerja dan kewangan menentukan jumlah bilangan haiwan yang dapat ditempatkan di PAWS, sebagaimana rumah kebajikan haiwan yang lain.

Sekiranya anda ingin meninggalkan haiwan di PAWS, anda melakukannya dengan kefahaman bahawa haiwan tersebut mungkin “diberi tidur” . Jika hakikat ini tidak dapat diterima, sila elakkan daripada meninggalkan haiwan di PAWS.

IMPORTANT:

No PAWS animal is to be taken out of the shelter on credit. Payment must be made and a receipt obtained. Always insist on a receipt for any money that you hand over to our office personnel.
